When Cornell University created a program for a freshman resource center, historic Balch Hall, a 1920s, gothic-style, original bluestone residence hall located on the university's North Campus, was chosen to house it. The center occupies a large part of the first floor, which was previously a dining hall. The existing spaces were consolidated and reconfigured to include lounges, a cafe with internet bar, offices, two seminar rooms with AV equipment, and a wired lecture room.
In order to incorporate the new interior features while maintaining the building's historic features, such as leaded-glass windows, mantled fireplaces and floor-to-ceiling paneling, extensive renovation was necessary with careful attention given to creating new features to appropriately complement the old. The Tatkon Resource Center is part of Cornell's first-year program and provides a supportive environment for students acclimating to life at a large university.
