Founded in 1892 as the Ithaca Conservatory of Music, Ithaca College has a long history of excellence in music education. In the new center, named in honor of the outgoing president, the addition of the mixed use teaching, studio, and performance space provides a welcome expansion of the school's facilities. Wrapping around three sides of the existing Ford Hall, the Whalen Center creates a new ceremonial entrance to the building and has a new 250-seat recital hall. The interface of the existing building and the addition is accomplished with a four-story skylit atrium. A major reception room on the upper lobby level affords spectacular views northward across the campus to Cayuga Lake.
