The challenge for the renovation team was to create a solution that would respect the original feeling of the inn. To accomplish this, incongruous additions were removed, and a more compatible rear addition created to complement the historic architecture, restore the view, and add needed room for dining.
Prior to the renovation four of the original fireplaces were obscured, and these were uncovered and meticulously restored, including extensive recreation of the historic millwork. Exposed sprinkler systems were concealed, and radiators replaced with unobtrusive heating/cooling systems. The renovation removed vinyl replacement windows and installed wood windows in character with the historic façade, which also benefited from the removal of metal fire escapes. Back inside, a much-loved mural depicting life in Aurora in the 1870s by a local artist was expertly repaired, restored, and rehung.
This project has demonstrated the positive impact that saving the structures of our past can have on a community. There has been positive press on the project, and the theme is revitalization. Residents talk about how the new inn is bringing people and pride back to the tiny town of Aurora.
