AIA New York State 2010 Annual Convention
October 14, 2010 -
Robert J. O'Brien, AIA, NCARB presented Demystifying Rainscreen Walls at this year's AIA NYS Convention in Buffalo, NY. Principal Associate Quay Thompson also attended the 3 day event.
Demystifying Rainscreen Walls
Rainscreen walls provide a long-lasting wall with better energy performance, yet few designers understand why they work or how to correctly design one. This panel discussion covered the theory behind, and essential elements of, this centuries-old design technique, the suitability of this wall type to different climates, various material choices, and some good ways to detail the all-important air barrier.
One of the biggest advantages of a rainscreen wall is the presence of an airpace where insulation may be installed. This helps to create more energy efficient walls. This talk examined ways to boost the thermal performance of the wall by expanding the airspace or using different types of insulation.
