Cornell University Project Commences
June 15, 2010 -
HOLT assisted the University with a comprehensive building assessment of Olin Library. All observations were assembled in a report that outlined a phased project approach to achieve all Life Safety improvements within the building with minimal disruption to staff, students, and visitors. The upgrades will improve safety for the occupants and the collections housed within the 243,000 SF building.
This project creates emergency exit pathways providing a safe and continuously protected exit egress to the exterior. This is achieved through extensive upgrades, and in some cases replacement of smoke detection, sprinkler and HVAC systems. Additionally, the mechanical, elevator and stairway shafts will be renovated. Extensive asbestos abatement was undertaken in preparation of the commencement of the work.
The project is occurring within an occupied and functioning building. Detailed phasing plans were developed to minimize the day-to-day impact of the extensive renovations on the occupants and the libraries collections. All books and research materials will remain in the building and accessible to staff for the duration of the project.
