2010 Guidelines for Design and Construction of Health Care Facilities Workshops

June 7, 2010 -

On June 3 and 4 of 2010, Principal Graham Gillespie and Architect Richard Wagner of HOLT Architects, P.C. attended a workshop focusing on the changes to the latest healthcare facility code. Sarah Galbreath, Project Manager, attended the same workshop in NYC in March. The workshop was designed and presented by the Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) and the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association (AHA).

Specifically designed for health care administrators, architects, consulting engineers, facility managers, project managers, contractors, and other specialty service providers, the two-day program was packed with information on the rationale behind the major changes and additions to the Guidelines document and provided attendees with a detailed understanding of the numerous differences between the 2006 and 2010 editions. A full day of the workshop focused on the revisions and new material in the 2010 edition of the Guidelines and featured a lecture format with open forums and question-and-answer sessions. The Massachusetts authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) attended each workshop to discuss how they apply the Guidelines and gave insight on their states' interpretations and use of the new material.

The new Guidelines place more responsibility on the architect and design team to educate and promote the latest regulations regarding patient safety and movement, infection control, commissioning and other design considerations. As planners, architects and interior designers, we can also offer the Owner insight into the latest changes to the guidelines, assist in developing the functional program, designing patient, staff and visitor-friendly settings, select appropriate surfaces and finishes, and offer our experience in interpreting the meaning and application of the Guidelines for the Design and Construction of Health Care Facilities to the specific project.
