Cayuga Medical Center engaged HOLT to determine the feasibility of renovating in-place the existing 10,000 square foot clinical laboratory.

Upon review it was determined that modification within current laboratory space to achieve the functional goals for the renovated lab would have been cost prohibitive and would not achieve the collaborative and multi-disciplinary "Core" laboratory concept and layout changes that the Medical Center was seeking to accomplish through renovation.

The location of the proposed 17,400 SF addition was selected because of its central location in the hospital and the ability to maintain controlled access. The new basement level lab is easily accessible to patients, staff and medical personnel delivering samples for testing from an elevator from the existing first floor Lobby.

The new addition will provide administrative and state-of-the-art flexible clinical space for equipment and staff in Accession, Blood Bank, PCR, and the Core, Microbiology and Cytology/Histology Labs. An integrated reception area with a waiting space and exam rooms will provide welcoming amenities and comfortable surroundings for laboratory staff to treat therapeutic phlebotomy patients. Large skylights will provide natural light throughout the entire Laboratory addition while maintaining the privacy of the occupants.

The proposed addition site is located between two existing patient towers. Currently the patient residents in these rooms have a view to Cayuga Lake and a garden that is the future laboratory site. A pervious or 'green' roof will be installed on the laboratory addition to maintain the garden view from patient rooms and the approximately 8,000 square foot green roof will minimize to the greatest extent possible the rain water runoff.

The new laboratory addition integrates USGBC design guidelines and is LEED Certified.
