Named in honor of the outgoing president, the addition's teaching, studio and performance space provides a welcome expansion of the school's facilities. Wrapping around three sides of the existing Ford Hall, the Whalen Center creates a new ceremonial entrance to the building and a new 250-seat recital hall. The interface of the existing building and the addition is accomplished with a 4-story skylighted atrium, bringing natural light into the interior of the building. A major reception room on the upper lobby level affords spectacular views northward across the campus to Cayuga Lake.
Other facilities in the new building include sound-isolated faculty studios, keyboard musicianship, ensemble collection, music education classrooms, rehearsal studios, control rooms, and a lecture room.
