Cayuga Medical Center at Ithaca

Ithaca, NY

420 gross square feet

Awards, Support

Traditionally hospitals need to provide easy access to a private space for patients, visitors and staff when in need of reflection or solace.

Creating this non-denominational sanctuary within a busy medical center can be a significant design challenge. HOLT's award winning design for a new Chapel within the Cayuga Medical Center at Ithaca successfully met this need. A central but discreet location was identified with ample natural light and good proximity to elevators and ICU. A shielded private entrance behind a curved glass block wall creates the required visual and acoustical isolation. Visitors are naturally drawn inward to the large colored glass window that dominates the space. Its south facing jewel-tone art glass panels arranged in an abstract pattern filter the outside light into pools of soft interior color. The tall chamber is capped with a circular ceiling form suggestive of the heavens above. Comfortable light weight sled base chairs provide the users with easy flexibility.
