Moffett Center Academic Renovation, PH 1
SUNY Cortland | Cortland, NY
SUNY Cortland’s 1940’s Moffett Center was originally built as a recreational facility including a pool, gym and related facilities. Its location, nestled in the center of the campus’ academic heart, make the building ideal to repurpose for academic uses.
Phase I of the Moffett Center rehabilitation project renovated the west side of the building for the Anthropology and Sociology Departments. The design takes advantage of the high ceiling of the former natatorium and allows faculty offices to share natural light streaming in from the existing tall windows.
A new building entrance improves pedestrian traffic and connections between Moffett and adjacent academic buildings on campus. The interior includes multi-functional spaces located along a pedestrian spine that accommodate seminar use and clusters of offices interspersed with common spaces for collaborative and informal scholarly exchange between students and faculty. Vibrant colors, wood walls and playful floor patterns create a rich environment for students and faculty.
