Upstate Cancer Center at Auburn Community Hospital

When Auburn Community Hospital wanted to expand their Oncology services for their local patients, they partnered with SUNY Upstate Cancer Center and chose HOLT Architects to design a new 13,900 SF Cancer treatment and infusion facility.

The Cancer Center was strategically placed corner intersection of North and Lansing Streets to create a welcoming entrance to the hospital campus with new opportunities for wayfinding and signage. The gable peaked roof, standing seam metal siding and brick accents were specifically chosen to echo the adjacent residential neighborhood and embody the design concept of “Cancer Care, closer to Home”.

The facility supports both radiation therapy and oncology infusion services. Patients enter through a glass vestibule on the east side into the “living room” waiting area. Radiation medicine patients are then directed to the imaging suite on the south side of the building with state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator and CT Simulator rooms while Medical Oncology patients are directed to the light and airy infusion suite on the north end of the building adjacent to a beautifully landscaped Healing Garden. Exam and procedure rooms are shared between both services with a centralized nurse station and ancillary support spaces down the middle of the building.

Based on the brand affiliation with SUNY Upstate Cancer Center, the interior design of the building provides a fresh, bright color pallet including deep pinks, lime greens and bright teals combined with “Auburn” purple. Artwork and wayfinding graphics were specifically coordinated for each room to tie the color scheme together and provide positive distraction for patients during their cancer care journey.
