Surgical Services Addition

Cayuga Medical Center’s existing surgical suite had not been renovated since it was constructed in the late 1970’s. Based on a strategic planning effort to expand surgical service, HOLT Architects worked closely with the surgical staff to program and plan a new surgical suite to meet the current and future needs of the Medical Center.

The plan reorganized the flow of materials and patients to create efficiencies and conform to best practices. The new operating rooms are designed to be flexible and are considerably larger than the existing rooms. The PACU will be expanded, as well as the quantity of Stage 2 recovery beds. The challenges for the design team included phasing the expansion and renovation of the area, all the while providing full services for this growing program.

The project involves an in depth study of the flow and process of materials, patients and staff to achieve greater efficiency and eliminate redundancy.
