Operating Room Suite Addition

Schuyler Hospital, a 25-bed critical access hospital located in Schuyler County was in need of a renovation to provide updated and enhanced access to outpatient services. With no major upgrades since the original construction in 1972, a shift toward increasing hospital access for outpatient services necessitated the project.

The project included an expanded surgical suite that focused on improving the size and quality of the specialized space. The HOLT team worked with the surgical staff to determine the most efficient patient, staff, and material flow to maximize the space and limitations of the existing building. The new rooms are precisely sized to meet the increasing spatial and technological requirements of current surgical procedures. A new multi-purpose procedure suite houses instrument processing and other support services; giving Schuyler flexibility to offer a wider range of services in response to community demand.

Through a communicative and collaborative process, HOLT Architects and Schuyler Hospital developed an exciting and transformative addition and renovation project that supported the Hospital’s budget, schedule, and program goals. The 13,000sf renovation and 4,900sf addition included a new welcoming face to the community, improved drop-off canopy, main lobby, and public amenities. The design also integrated new way-finding strategies to separate the clinical circulation from the public circulation and relocated registration, the outpatient laboratory, administrative office suite, human resources and the quality and education office suite near the new main entrance.

HOLT worked closely with Schuyler Hospital to submit the limited review as well as construction notifications Certificate of Need to the NYS Department of Health.

A four-bed post-anesthesia care unit and seven-bed pre- and post-operative care unit were designed with central nurse stations and the flexibility to grow and shrink throughout the day or week as patient volumes vary.

Additional scope items include renovations to the imaging department that create operational efficiencies by relocating the ultra-sound room to improve patient and staff access; laboratory renovations that upgrade the microbiology testing area and provide a new outpatient phlebotomy area; administrative office renovations that both consolidate and improve efficiencies; and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems upgrades that comply with current codes and support all areas of hospital improvements.
